Note: some of these techniques are no longer allowed in mainstream judo competitions, notably the Kuchiki Taoshi and the knee pick. But they are still a part of the corpus of judo techniques, and they should be learned and practiced to be a complete judoka. They can still be used in Kosen judo, freestyle judo, jiujitsu competitions, sambo, wrestling, MMA, and wherever two judoka agree that they will use them during a particular randori session.

These kind of leg grabbing techniques are sometimes referred to as “old school judo,” since prior to 2010, they were allowed and used by many judoka. Other banned techniques that used to be allowed include standing armbars, flying chokes and flying armbars (meaning jumping from a standing position straight in to a choke or armbar).
