judo hygiene

Basic Judo Hygiene

Judo hygiene is super important! A dirty training partner or a dirty dojo can lead to bad outcomes, everything from an unpleasant smell making training unpleasant, up to serious infections that require medication. On the flip side, a clean and healthy dojo encourages training and makes judo sessions something to look forward to. So always keep it clean!!!

Some of it is obvious, some less obvious. Here is a list to get you started:

  • Clean body, especially hands and feet.
  • Clean uniform – always wash your gi after every practice.
  • Short trimmed fingernails and toenails
  • Remove all jewelry before practice, including wedding rings
  • Long hair should be put up and away from the shoulders, although this is really for you rather than your partner – if someone accidentally grabs a handful of your long loose hair, you can’t really blame them.
  • No shoes on the mat
  • No bare feet off the mat – always wear shoes, slides or slippers off the mat to avoid tracking dirt and bacteria on to the mat.
  • Try to avoid unnecessary fragrances or perfume and makeup – it’s judo, not a date night.
  • Having fresh breath is not super necessary, but it’s a nice plus. Pop a mint before class, it takes two seconds.
